TVS Motor and Suzuki make smart gains in scooter market in tough FY2019
Scooter sales register negative growth for the first time in a decade.
If India Auto Inc closed FY2019 on a low single-digit growth rate of 5.15 percent, among the contributory factors has been the poor sales of the scooter segment which slid into negative territory after 12-odd years. Right from FY2007, when a total of 1,050,109 scooters were sold (+11.64%), to FY2018 which saw sales of 6,719,911 units (+19.90%), the scooter segments was booming. Until FY2019 happened – at 6701,469 scooters sold last fiscal (-0.27%), the scooter segment was the sole segment to be in the red. In fact, in FY2019, of the seven OEMs in the fray, four registered de-growth.
