Hyundai Motor India turns UV market share leader with 23% in Q1 FY2021

Although it’s been a dismal and slow-selling first quarter in the ongoing fiscal, a hard-charging Hyundai drives ahead of Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra in the UV market share stakes. Sibling Kia is a close fourth.

It’s been a dismal first quarter of the ongoing fiscal year (April-June 2020 / Q1 FY2021) for India Auto Inc. Overall industry numbers are down a massive 75 percent year on year to 1.49 million units compared to 6 million units in Q1 FY2020 . The prolonged economic slowdown, Covid-19 pandemic, subsequent lockdowns, a washed-out April, OEMs resuming production only in mid-May and hesitant consumers made for massive sales speed-breakers. All vehicle segments have been badly impacted. In Q1 FY2021, the passenger vehicle segment took a hit of 78% with sales of 153,734 units (Q1 FY2020: 712,684).
