India Yamaha Motor issued a precautionary recall for Yamaha FZ 25 and Yamaha Fazer 25 on January 6, 2018.
The voluntary recall is being undertaken to address an issue related to Head Cover Bolt loosening in 23,897 motorcycles – 21,640 units of FZ 25 and 2,257 units of Fazer 25 – manufactured from January 2017. The Japanese bikemaker says that the affected motorcycles will be repaired free of cost at any of the its authorised dealers and the company has started contacting owners individually.
The company says it is working closely with its dealer partners to ensure the repair experience is as convenient and efficient as possible.
This is India Yamaha's sixth voluntary recall exercise with previous recalls made in 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014 and also in 2013.
It can be recalled that the company had issued a recall note for 56,082 units of its 113cc Ray scooter in 2013 due to some welding issues in the handlebar area. That was followed by a recall of around 100 units of its 1000cc superbike YZF-R1 in 2014 when the parent company had detected technical snags in the headlamp units. Later in December 2015, seven units of YZF-R1 and two units of YZF-R1M were recalled by the company to address issues detected in the transmission system.
In June 2016, the company recalled nearly all the units (912) of the YZF-R3 it has sold in India since its launch the previous year. The recall was for dection of undisclosed defects related to the malfunctioning of clutch pressure plate assembly and oil pump assembly in the YZF-R3, which is powered by a parallel-twin, 321cc engine.
In February 2017, it recalled 1,155 units of the YZF-R3 once again. This was done after Yamaha Motor Company Japan detected a defect in the motorcycle's fuel tank bracket and main switch sub-assembly.
Besides India Yamaha, other two-wheeler manufacturers that have voluntarily recalled their vehicles are Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (in 2012), Harley-Davidson India (twice in 2015), Triumph Motorcycle India (in 2015) and Bajaj Auto for its KTM 390 Duke models (in 2014).
Yamaha FZ 25 / Fazer 25
Autocar Professional estimates that India Yamaha has sold more than 25,000 units of the FZ 25 and Fazer 25 until December 2017 in the domestic market. The company now stands as the largest player in the entry-level single-cylinder, quarter-liter motorcycle segment in India.
The FZ 25 and Fazer 25 models are positioned as the upgrade options for the existing large base of the Yamaha FZ (150cc) riders along with many first time buyers in the maturing market.
