British iconic motorcycle marque, Triumph, today introduced its updated Street Triple S in the country, tagged at a price of Rs 8,50,000 (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
The new motorcycle sees the biggest change in the form of its upgraded heart, which now grows in capacity from the erstwhile 675cc to now being a 765cc liquid-cooled, DOHC, three-cylinder unit.
The engine generates 41 percent more power than the outgoing motorcycle, and produces 112bhp and 73Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox and the bike gets ride-by-wire throttle technology.
The bike has also shed some weight to now tip the scales at 166kgs and boasts of being the lightest in its category. It gets an all-new powder coated ‘Gullwing’ rear swingarm for improved levels of high speed stability and also gets matured suspension setup, with Showa sourced shock absorbers doing duty front and back.
The Triumph Street Triple S gets two-piston sliding callipers from Nissin at the front, and Brembo procured single-piston sliding callipers at the rear. Safety kit on offer includes ABS and it also gets a quickshifter, adjustable levers and an exhaust sourced from Arrow.
Speaking at the launch, Vimal Sumbly, MD, Triumph Motorcycles India, said “Our ambition was to deliver a state of the art roadster that is both addictive everyday fun and a full track weapon but with its own distinctive attitude. The Triumph Street Triple S delivers on these while demonstrating unique levels of power, performance, technology and suspension. Owning the Street Triple also gives Triumph enthusiast a chance at owning a bit of the exhilarating Moto-2 engine technology now that our exhilarating new partnership is in the books. Our hope to keep making newer and better associations and products and to keep delivering on the high-standards that is the Triumph way of riding.”
Riding further with the ‘Make in India’ approach
The Street Triple S is being assembled from CKD kits at the company’s facility at Manesar, in Haryana. Triumph India, which currently sees only about 20 percent of its model line-up being assembled locally, has plans of substantially turning things around in the current fiscal.
The company, which currently holds a market share of 27 percent in the class of 500cc and above premium motorcycles in the country, aims to aggressively change its operating strategy and see about 90 percent of its portfolio moving over to the CKD channel. At present, close to 80 percent of its models on offer are being brought in the country via the CBU route.
According to Sumbly, the company stands surefooted to hold increase in volumes for local assembly of up to 1,200 motorcycles annually and the need for any fresh investments in this regard is unlikely in the near future.
Customer centric and more brand engagements
The company has been quite active in pushing its brand out to the enthusiast motorcyclists with its rider training activities and also some recent promotions, like the Triumph Tiger Trail, drawing good traction by including famous personalities from the entertainment industry.
More such programs and activities continue to remain Triumph’s main tools in the near future, where it also plans to organise track riding and training experiences with its Speed Triple series of motorcycles. The company will also explore digital space to come up with more engagement campaigns and get involved with its target audience.
Triumph also for the very first time showcased its range of official brand merchandise, which will be available at its showrooms across the country. The company sees huge potential in this lifestyle category of products and going forward, it would be exploring it further and expand the range on offer.
With its recent launch, Triumph India is also set to increase its dealership count in the country. While a new outlet in Orissa is in the anvil for inauguration in the next week, it is going to be followed by a brand new one in Goa shortly after. Triumph India intends to up the number to 25 from the existing 17, within the next couple of years.
