Toyota has launched its second-generation Innova, christened Innova Crysta, at a starting price of Rs 13.84 lakh for the base trim and going up to Rs 20.78 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
With the new pricing, a difference of Rs 4.20 lakh compared to the old and new top ends, the MPV moves further away from the likes of the Maruti Ertiga and the Renault Lodgy and into an unchallenged zone for now, with only the upcoming Tata Hexa being a possible contender.
Though built on the same platform as its predecessor, the new Innova gets an improved, attractive design and also stands longer, wider and taller than its predecessor. Up front, the nose borrows styling cues from the current-gen Corolla Altis and Camry. The hexagonal grille is now wider and taller, and extends all the way to the base of the nose. The headlamps are double-barrel projector units with integrated LED daytime running lamps.
The cabin is a major talking point about the new MPV. The utilitarian theme of its predecessor has made way for a more luxurious and well-appointed cabin with an all-new dashboard featuring multiple trim inserts and an extensive list of features. Toyota has upped the luxury quotient with the inclusion of features such electric adjust front seats, leather upholstery and climate control being available on the top trim level.
The engines powering the Innova Crysta, which was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2016 in New Delhi in February, are part of Toyota’s new GD series of downsized diesel motors. The old car’s 102hp 2.5-litre diesel has made way for a significantly more powerful 150hp 2.4-litre unit. The new diesel in paired to a five-speed manual gearbox with longer gears to facilitate highway driving. Also on offer is a larger, more powerful 174hp 2.8-litre diesel unit paired to a new six-speed automatic gearbox. The engines come with three drive modes – Eco, Normal and Sport.
The carmaker has also improved occupant protection in the new Innova with the top trim featuring equipment such as seven airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, stability control and three point seatbelts for all occupants, even for the middle passenger in the third row who gets a three-point harness that spools out from the roof.
The Toyota Innova, during its life cycle, had been subject to consistent increase in prices, but still managed to attract buyers. And while the cost of the new MPV will come as a shock to some, the car does look all set to continue with this success story.
