Tatas confirm plans for making EV batteries, chips

Tata Sons chairman, N Chandrasekharan, said Group companies have pooled their strengths to make the foray into EVs happen.

Tatas confirm plans for making EV batteries, chips

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, has confirmed  that the group is looking at the possibility of manufacturing semiconductors and EV batteries in the near future. He was speaking at the launch of the Avinya EV concept.

Responding to media queries on why Tata Motors has not applied for a battery PLI, he said “ We are seriously considering getting into manufacturing of EV batteries and semiconductors, and are definitely on it for the moment”. Chandrasekharan, however did not clarify if the battery manufacturing would take place at group company, Tata Chemicals or at any other entity.

The unveil of the Avinya is Tata Motors’ second EV concept to be unveiled within a month, the first one being the Curvve coupe e-SUV in regard to which  Tata Sons  Chairman confirmed that the “Curvve concept would be ready in the next 24 months." 

The chairman reiterated that Tata Motors has enormous possibilities to go global in EVs. “We have designed this car with global ambitions to make this a future benchmark, and therefore I see enormous possibilities for us to go global. Our focus will be to get the first car out to the standards that we aspire to in terms of software, electric and electronic architecture, passenger comfort and even safety. We have really very high aspirations with our new concept vehicle”

On the significance of the launch to the Tata Group's plans to create an EV ecosystem, the chairman said the company  couldn’t have done it without working alongside group companies and said the company’s foray in EVs happened because “we were able to pool in our group strengths”. Moving forward, chairman N Chandrasekharan said that Tata Motors will gain strength to strength and emerge as the dominant player in the Indian EV market.
