In yet another instance of the growing industry and academia connect in the country, Tata Motors has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Automotive Skill Development Council (ASDC), a government of India-recognised skill council for a collaborative skill development program in the automotive sector.
This partnership will help Tata Motors’ skill development centres across its six plants in India and will comply as per competency levels of the NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework).
The MoU was signed by Gajendra Chandel, chief HR officer, Tata Motors, and Sunil Chaturvedi, CEO, ASDC, with an objective to prepare youth by imparting and enhancing industry-ready occupational skills followed by assessment and certification on the basis of skill levels achieved and certified as per NSQF. The program will comprise modules based on skills for design, engineering, manufacturing, automobile production, sales and service as well in various support functions with a focus on quality, productivity, dexterity, discipline and safety.
Commenting on the association, Gajendra Chandel said, “We are keen to see the Indian automotive industry becoming globally competitive with Tata Motors playing a significant role. In line with the government of India’s aggressive plans under the Skill India Mission towards ‘Kaushal Bharat – Kushal Bharat,’ we aim to contribute, positively to build India’s competitiveness. Launched on July 15, 2015 with an intent to train over 40 crore people in India by 2020, the Skill India Campaign complements not only Make in India but also to reap India’s demographic dividend by enhancing employability within India as well as in other countries. To support and make this a reality, the corporate partnership of Tata Motors with ASDC is a step in that direction.”
Speaking on this partnership, Sunil Chaturvedi said, “ASDC is the industry’s own skill certification offering qualifications across the value chain of R&D, manufacturing, sales and service, road transportation domains, covering all levels from lower hands skills to high end technical and managerial skills. Through this collaboration with Tata Motors, the expectation would be to propagate the industry’s own ASDC certification among the youth who wish to make a career in the exciting field of automobiles”
The automotive industry is a significant generator of employment in India and is also a big contributor to the economy. As of FY2015, it employs a total of 31 million people (2 million directly and 29 million indirectly), contributes 7.1% of the GDP, 49% off the manufacturing GDP, 27% of the industrial GDP and 7% of exports.
Till date, the ASDC has contributed to the development this industry by creating 188 Qualification Packs (QPs) comprising of 938 National Occupational Standards (NOS) related to the automotive sector. Tata Motors’ partnership with ASDC will further enhance the expertise in conducting research, developing training course curriculums and certification of trainers and students, in consultation with experts from the automotive industry and from academia.
Tata Motors says it has, for long, been helping create the right set of talent pool for the automobile engineering and manufacturing industry. With a first-of-its-kind MoU with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), the company has over the past few years signed over six such agreements with leading institutes and organisations to develop skilled and highly competent manpower for being future- ready.
