In another global affirmation of the high-quality skills of trained youngsters in the Indian automotive industry, Tata Motors’ Aditya Pratap Singh Rathore has secured the highest position and points at the 44th World Skills competition held from October 15-18, 2017 in Abu Dhabi.
Representing India in the Automobile Technology skills category, Aditya Pratap Singh Rathore won the country’s first ever Medallion for Excellence. Hosted by EmiratesSkills and Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC) and organised by the Abu Dhabi Center for Technical & Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET), this has been the largest skills competition to date.
Organised since 1950, the biennial WorldSkills is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world. It aims to showcase and inspire world-class excellence in skills and introduce youth to a variety of skilled careers.
Considered as the Skill Olympics, WorldSkills provides a global platform to competitors who represent the best of their peers and are selected from skill competitions in WorldSkills Member countries and regions. Competitors, all under the age of 21 years, from the 77 member countries demonstrate their technical abilities to execute specific tasks for which they study and/or perform in their workplace.
India, represented by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) as its member organisation, has been participating in the competition since 2003. This year, around 1,300 youngsters from 59 WorldSkills Member countries and regions showcased their talent across 51 skills competitions, with India participating in 26 Skills. A total of 36 countries participated in the Automobile Technology skill, the highest number of competitors amongst the five skills of ‘Transportation and Logistics’ category.
Tata Motors’ talent-generating programmes
Tata Motors, in association with institutions like NSDC, has been contributing to the Skill India mission since 2014. The company says it is nurturing a vast talent pool, preparing them for the future automotive industry. As part of its programmes to provide technical and vocational education for unemployed youth, Tata Motors has set itself a goal to train between 30,000 to 40,000 people in the next three years in skills specific to the automobile industry. Additionally, training programmes in collaboration with the Automotive Skill Development Council (ASDC) at its different manufacturing plants, various dealerships, and services centres are already underway.
To enhance training quality, Tata Motors has developed standardised course content for automotive trades – mechanics and driver training, partnered with reputed NGOs having previous experience of running skill development program, built capacity of partners through train-the-trainer and management development programs and also provided practical exposure to students through on-the-job trainings and industry visits.
