In its first ever recall exercise in India, Suzuki Motorcycle (SMIL) has announced a recall for its new Access 125 scooter, which was first unveiled in 2016 Auto Expo in February, and was later launched in March.
According to an official communication from SMIL, the new Access 125 manufactured between March 8 to June 22, 2016, which almost covers all the units sold since its launch, could have potential mechanical snags in the rear axle or wheel assembly.
“Suzuki Motorcycle is holding a service campaign for the New Access 125 scooters manufactured between March 8 and June 22, 2016 to inspect and replace the rear axle shaft as a precautionary measure. This service campaign would cover 54,740 units of the New Access 125 manufactured during this period,” quotes the press note.
The company has further conveyed that starting today, the affected customers will be contacted by the dealerships and the replacement of the rear axle shaft will be done free of cost.
“As a goodwill basis, SMIPL will offer free periodic maintenance service to all the customers who will report to the dealership for replacement,” the company note says.
According to the company spokesperson, “In pursuance of Suzuki’s commitment to customer satisfaction and as a matter of abundant precaution and safety, we have decided to undertake this service campaign on the New Access 125 scooters to address issues of rear axle / wheel stability that has been identified in some of these scooters.”
Suzuki Motorcycle’s recall becomes second such exercise by a two-wheeler manufacturer in India in 2016. Earlier last month, India Yamaha Motor had issued a voluntary note recalling nearly all the entry-level midsize sportsbike YZF-R3 units sold in India. Yamaha had made such recalls in 2013, 2014 and 2015 as well.
Besides the two, other two-wheeler manufacturers that have voluntarily recalled their vehicles are Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (in 2012), Harley-Davidson India (twice in 2015), Triumph Motorcycle India (in 2015) and Bajaj Auto for its KTM 390 Duke models (in 2014).
