The booming scooter market is churning out record statistics, and a good number of them are from the recently ended FY2018. While the market leader Honda Activa crossed the 3-million sales milestone for the first time, and the TVS Jupiter and Hero Maestro scaled new highs, the Suzuki Access 125 is notching handsome growth. Could it be the dark horse in the Indian scooter market?
The Suzuki Access 125 has clocked its best-ever sales performance in FY2018. While the Activa posted 14.2 percent YoY growth (3,154,030 units), the TVS Jupiter sold 810,916 units (+32%) and the Hero Maestro 477,822 units (+26%). The Honda Dio is the placed fourth with 409,233 units.
At fifth place is the Suzuki Access 125 with 408,334 units, the ranking the same as in FY2017. This is a handsome 53.98 percent YoY growth in FY2018 and 143,153 units more than in FY2017. In fact, this is the first time that Suzuki Access has crossed the 400,000 unit sales mark in the domestic market, with the previous highest being 265,181 units in FY2017.
The Access 125 is facing its toughest competition from the recently launched Honda Grazia.
With average sales of 33,000 units per month, the Suzuki Access 125 is facing its toughest competition from the new Honda Grazia, which was launched in November 2017 and has sold more than 100,000 units already.
While the Grazia sells at Rs 58,133, the Access retails at Rs 55,045 (all prices ex-showroom Delhi), which is the cheapest 125cc scooter in India.
Another factor that is playing in its favour is the fact that Suzuki Access 125 has a claimed fuel efficiency of 56.7kpl, the second highest in the country for two-wheelers. Suzuki seems to have hit the right chords among the customers when it introduced some minor but conspicuous changes in the Access in 2016. This was clearly visible in their FY2017 sales which indicated that customers are aspiring for more powerful 125cc engines.
Suzuki is going to launch the Burgman street, which was showcased at the auto expo 2018. The maxi-scooter would be powered by the same 125cc engine and is expected to be priced around Rs 7,000 more than the Access SE (Special Edition).
