Motorists in India have learned to treat the first and the 15th of every month with caution. It’s on these days that the government tweaks the prices of petrol and diesel.

This time around, the price revision has happened 24 hours later. As of the midnight of March 16-17, oil marketing companies have hiked fuel prices. While a litre of petrol is now costlier by Rs 3.07 in Delhi (including State levies), diesel becomes dearer by Rs 1.90 a litre.

With this latest price hike, a litre of petrol now costs Rs 59.68 in Delhi, Rs 63.76 in Kolkata, Rs 65.79 in Mumbai and Rs 59.13 in Chennai. Meanwhile, a litre of diesel will have consumers pay Rs 48.33 in Delhi, Rs 50.75 in Kolkata, Rs 55.06 in Mumbai and Rs 49.09 in Chennai.

The price hike is cited as “The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and India rupee-US$ exchange rate warrant increase in price of petrol and diesel, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision.”
