Mumbai Port has been focusing on the export and handling of cars and has emerged as the leading port on the West Coast of India, growing at about 25% for the past few years.
In June this year, Mumbai Port Trust reduced vessel-related charges by about 10% on the applicable scale of rates for coastal vessels with further reduction of wharfage charges on vehicles. The move is mainly to encourage the coastal movement of cargo, especially automobiles, by Ro-Ro (Roll-on-Roll-off) ships and to meet the demand of vehicle manufacturers and Ro-Ro vessel operators.
