MTS Systems Corporation, the USA-based global supplier of high performance R&D test systems and position sensors with applications across the the automotive, aerospace, railways, energy and other industries, is keen on the deployment of electric actuation technology in its portfolio of damper test and road simulators systems for speedier and more efficient testing processes.
Within the automotive R&D segment, the company is known for developing and marketing cost-effective component testing solutions including steering knuckle test rig, exhaust assembly test rig, tire-coupled steering test rig, suspension member test rigs and other R&D equipment.
It is known that around June 2014, MTS had acquired a 100 percent stake in Roehrig Engineering (REI), a firm known for developing testing systems utilising electric and electromagnetic actuation technology. REI specialised in shock absorber testing equipment to serve the requirements of NASCAR racing teams. The technology is understood to have applications beyond racing to broadly encompass laboratory testing of ground vehicles.
This acquisition helped MTS introduce the electric actuation technology into its products under damper test and road simulators portfolios, including the proven EMA and SYD series damper test systems and ePost tyre-coupled road simulators. According to company officials, as compared to the higher capacity servo-hydraulic systems, the electric damper systems deliver cleaner and more energy efficient operations.
Talking to Autocar Professional on the sidelines of the Symposium of International Automotive Technology (SIAT 2015), organised by ARAI in Pune last month, Paul Nave, group manager – ground vehicle market and systems, MTS Systems Corporation, said: “We are talking about this new technology in our damper test systems as it suits the changing customer needs and ensures more efficient and cleaner testing performance in automotive R&D labs. These are imported into India as fully built units. We ship the same standard equipment to India as the ones used in the west. Our focus is on quality and more efficient testing systems as we are committed to meet changing customer needs.”
MTS’ test-based products and services for ground vehicles span across automotive, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, motorsports, and off-highway segments. The company is a supplier of test systems to ARAI, NATRiP, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki India, Ashok Leyland, John Deere, Bajaj Auto, TVS, Honda and others. Jaguar Land Rover, Toyota, Polaris, Piaggio, Nissan, and ZF are some of the company’s global clients.
