Maruti Wagon R crosses 2m sales milestone
Wagon R customers have purchased the car multiple times. The company says Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Ahmedabad have remained a strong market contributing towards it total sales.
India’s largest passenger vehicle maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL), has achieved another milestone, with its popular entry level car Wagon R, crossing 2 million sales mark in 18 years.
MSIL introduced Wagon R in 1999, and has remained one of the most popular choices in the Indian market. The car since its introduction has managed to be among the top 10 cars being sold in the country.
In fact last month 7 out the top 10 cars sold in the passenger vehicle segment , coming out of the Maruti Suzuki stable, that included Wagon R which sold 14,571 units compared to 13,907 in August,2016.
As per Maruti Suzuki, the Wagon R has always attracted discerning customers, and the company has introduced new design as well technology upgrades that has helped it be as a top choice for first-time car-buyers. The company has constantly introduced features such as dual airbags, multiple fuel options, ABS, premium interiors and Auto Gear Shift in Wagon R.
In 2011, Wagon R scored its first million sales nearly 133 months after its launch. However, it took just 79 months to scale the next million sales mark. Commenting on the milestone, R S Kalsi, senior ED, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki, says, “Maruti Suzuki has systematically upgraded the brand with new design and features. Needless to say Wagon R has continued to top the sales chart. Despite intensified competition in small car space, Wagon R continues to be the preferred choice of the practical car buyers.”

As per Maruti Suzuki, nearly 45 percent of Wagon R customers have bought it as their first car. At the same time, close to 20 percent of Wagon R customers have purchased the car multiple times. The company says Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Ahmedabad have remained a strong market contributing towards it total sales. Among the many features demanded by customers, Auto Gear Shift accounts for over 16 percent sales while CNG accounts for over 20 percent sales.
With this milestone, Wagon R becomes the third model in the country after Maruti 800 and Alto, to cross the two-million cumulative sales mark.
