Maruti Suzuki India today officially launched the new 1.5-litre, petrol-engined Vitara Brezza compact SUV, unveiled at the Auto Expo 2020. Priced from Rs 734,000 for the base LXi variant through to Rs 11.40 lakh for the ZXi + AT (dual-tone). Compared to the BS IV model, prices for the BS VI Vitara Brezza petrol start Rs 29,000 lower than the BS IV diesel and end about Rs 80,000 higher.
The thoroughly revamped Vitara Brezza, which sees a switch to a petrol-only powertrain – Suzuki’s K15B 1.5-litre petrol engine – which takes the place of the original Vitara Brezza’s 1.3-litre diesel, as part of Maruti’s larger plan to withdraw diesels from its line-up by April 1, 2020. The Vitara Brezza shares its 105hp and 138Nm, 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine with other Marutis like the Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, while a 4-speed torque converter-equipped auto is available as an option. Interestingly, Suzuki’s SHVS Smart Hybrid tech is reserved for automatic versions of the compact SUV only.
The carmaker has also revealed ARAI fuel-efficiency figures for the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza petrol. Variants with the 5-speed manual are rated at 17.03kpl while the automatic, with the mild-hybrid tech, has an ARAI-rated 18.76kpl.
Speaking at the launch of the new Vitara Brezza, Kenichi Ayukawa, managing director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India said, “The Vitara Brezza has evolved to become a highly powerful brand over the past four years. Keeping up with its strong, urban and premium appeal, the all-new Vitara Brezza is bolder, sportier and more powerful. We are confident that the all-new Vitara Brezza will take forward the rich legacy of its predecessor with an overwhelming customer response.”
The new Vitara Brezza gets three new dual-tone colour options – Sizzling Red with midnight Black roof, Torque Blue with midnight Black roof and Granite Grey with Autumn Orange roof.
Launched in February 2016, the game-changing Vitara Brezza took the market by storm and was the longstanding UV leader for nearly four years. Since then it has sold a total of 518,807 diesel-engined units, till end-January 2020.
A point to note here is that as the the K15B engine in the Vitara Brezza displaces 1,462cc, it does not qualify for small-car excise sops available to models with length under 4m and petrol engines with displacement under 1,200cc. This reflects in the Vitara Brezza petrol’s prices, which are higher than a few of its rivals’.
