Mahindra recalls 1,577 diesel Thars to replace camshaft

Mahindra & Mahindra has recalled a batch of 1,577 units of the Thar diesel variant, manufactured between September 7 and December 25, 2020, to inspect and replace the camshaft.

The company, in a regulatory filing, said “A machine setting error at the supplier’s plant, on specific dates, may have affected camshafts in some engines of the diesel Thar.”

Owners of the 1,577 Thars will be individually contacted by the company and the replacement exercise, if required, carried out free of cost. Mahindra’s action is in compliance with SIAM’s voluntary code on vehicle recall.

Launched on October 2, 2020, the new Thar saw surging customer demand and has seen its waiting periods soar. The current waiting period for the Thar in some cities is higher than 10 months, depending on the variant and colour.

Between September and end-December 2020, a total of 5,073 new Thars have been sold. The diesel variant, with 4,408 units accounts for an overwhelming 87% of these sales.

The Mahindra Thar is available with a 152hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 132hp, 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine options. Both engines get a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox option. As standard, the Thar gets a 4x4 system and a manual-shift transfer case with a low ratio.
