On independence day last week, prime minister Narendra Modi made a sterling call to industry to make India a manufacturing hub. The forthcoming three-day India Manufacturing Show 2014 (IMS), to be organised jointly by the IMS Foundation and Laghu Udyog Bharati (LUB) in Bangalore (September 11-13), is expected to attract attention from the domestic and international manufacturing sector, and the auto industry in particular. The IMS Foundation is a single largest collaborative platform of all Indian and global manufacturing, engineering and other ancillary industries including public sector undertakings (PSUs), especially for Micro, Small and Medium Scale industries while Laghu Udyog Bharati is an all-India organization catering to Micro and Small Industries. IMS will be held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BEIC), supported by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Industries (MSME) and the Ministry of Science & Technology and Public Enterprises. A concurrent show – Emma Expo India 2014 – for more than 200 Taiwan firms to showcase their products including auto electronics will also held. At a curtain raiser today, the chairman of the IMS organising committee, Yajnanarayana Kammaje, said, “The manufacturing industry is looking good overall with a new government taking charge and introducing several policy measures. With a good, practical Budget, there is an upswing in the industry.” “Seventeen percent of the GDP today is gained through the manufacturing industry. We can expect an increase of 23 percent in GDP in the next four years with the growth of the manufacturing industry. We need to bridge the gap between small, medium and large industries, and IMS is a platform to ensure there is wide scope for more industry collaborations,” he added. The fair will focus on understanding investments in technology, quality systems and applications development. It will also have sessions for students who will get a chance to showcase their innovations in engineering and demonstrate their working models. They will get an opportunity to know about the importance of the manufacturing sector and its implications for nation building, Kammaje said. The Indian auto sector exhibitor profile will include those from the four-wheeler, HCV, LCV, construction vehicle and equipment, lubricants and petroleum products, alternate fuel technology, auto components, service station equipment, car care, agriculture vehicles and equipment, electric vehicles, performance parts and accessories industries. Over 250 exhibitors from India are expected to participate in the Bangalore expo which will see visitors from across the globe and all parts of India.
