Eighteen years after Hyundai Motor India began commercial operations, the carmaker today rolled out its seven-millionth car from the Sriperumbudur plant in Chennai.
The landmark car is a top-end, white automatic Creta SUV driven off the production line by managing director Y K Koo and vice-president – production, Ganesh Mani S.
The company says it has crossed the one million production milestone at an average of every 18 months. The millionth car – a Santro – rolled out in 2006, eight years after commencement of commercial production in 1998. Thereafter, production picked up momentum, with the next million milestone coming up within an average of 18 -19 months. The five-millionth car was flagged off in October 2013 by Hyundai Motor India’s brand ambassador Shahrukh Khan.
Commenting on the latest landmark, Y K Koo, MD and CEO, Hyundai Motor India, said, “Hyundai Motor India has always set new benchmarks in terms of quality and customer delight by introducing new products with new technology and design to the Indian market, demonstrating superior manufacturing prowess. Our ‘Made in India’ products have impressed global and Indian customers alike. We now have to move to realise our vision to touch 10 million units within the first half of 2021.
Hyundai Motor India has been the country’s top exporter consistently for 12 years since 2004 with a volume of 2,464,723 cars to date, driving shipments from Chennai Port. The Korean carmaker has also played a pivotal role in the economic development of Sriperumpudur region by generating employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly.
