The made-in-India badge is now expanding its footprint to all corners of the world and the emission technology upgrade to BS VI gives OEMs a new opportunity for sales: global exports. The latest update on this front comes from Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) which has begun exporting its next-generation 125cc motorcycle, the SP125 to Europe, in the form of CKD kits.
HMSI, which began its made-in-India export operation in 2001 with its debut model Activa, says consignments carrying over 2,000 CKD kits to Europe have been despatched since August 2020. The company has an export portfolio of 18 two-wheeler models and supplies to 25 export markets led by Asia, Middle East and Latin America.
The SP125 BS VI is currently manufactured at the Tapukara plant in Rajasthan, which has a manufacturing capacity of 1.2 million units per annum.
The SP125 was the first BS VI motorcycle launched by Honda in November 2019. It has 19 new patent applications, aa completely new 125cc HET engine with eSP technology that delivers 16% more mileage and has nine segment-first technologies and features in SP125 (full digital meter, distance to empty, average fuel efficiency, real-time fuel efficiency, LED DC headlamp, engine start/stop switch, integrated headlamp beam/passing switch, eco indicator, gear position indicator).
Speaking on the SP125 being shipped to Europe, Atsushi Ogata, MD, president and CEO, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India said, “The transition from BS IV to BS VI was a challenging phase for the Indian automobile industry. Honda 2Wheelers India converted this challenge into an opportunity to export to advanced countries and have started exporting CKD kits of our 125cc motorcycle SP125 to Europe. This is a testimony of our superior quality and technology as well as commitment to expand our global footprint. We are looking forward to expand to many new markets in future.”
