The updates from the country's capital in the last two days has been quite shocking, from the increase in contribution from vehicle emissions to the possibility of the government looking at stopping the usage of private vehicles.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the capital region at 3pm today was found to be around 401, which falls in the 'severe' category and has been highest this season. According to the AQI a reading between 0 and 50 is considered 'good'; 51 and 100 'satisfactory'; 101 and 200 'moderate'; 201 and 300 'poor'; 301 and 400 'very poor'; and 401 and 500 'severe'.
As Delhi, witnessed an overnight spike in the Particulate Matter (PM), the central and state government are looking to address the critical situation. In an interaction with news agency ANI, the chairman of the Environment Pollution Control Authority, Bhure Lal, said: "From November 1, our graded action response plan will be implemented. Let us hope Delhi air pollution situation doesn't deteriorate or else will have to stop plying of private vehicles, only public transport will be used."
Among the leading factors is the rapid and unplanned urban development along with unprecedented population growth has led to a relentless increase in air pollution in this megacity. Though many state and central government have been encouraging people to use public transport, a lack of adequate public transportation system within and outside of Delhi have failed to back this appeal.
