Japan’s Yamaha Motor reported a near-8% rise in global net sales from its motorcycle business to Rs 26,947 crore in the quarter ended June, on improved sales of higher margin products and fresh launches.
The motorcycle business segment moved into profitability thanks to structural reforms and the effect of new product launches such as the YZF-R1, which was launched in March, and the MT-09 Tracer, the company said.
“Unit sales increased in developed markets thanks to the effect of new product launches such as the YZF-R1 and the MT-09 Tracer, with sales in North America and Europe increasing 28% and 14% respectively over the same period in the previous fiscal year,” Yamaha said in a release.
Improved sales during the quarter also lead to a higher operating income in the quarter, as it grew a whopping 66% year on year to Rs 967.2 crore.
“Operating income also increased with factors generating increased income, such as the effect of sales increases, cost reductions, yen depreciation etc, absorbing negative factors such as increases in development costs and currency depreciation in emerging markets,” the company added.
The motorcycle business contributes to more than 63% in revenues for the Japanese conglomerate and with higher sales in the segment, the company reported an 8.6% rise in consolidated net sales to Rs 42,697 crore.
Apart from its mainstay motorcycle manufacturing operations, Yamaha Motor runs global operations in the marine, power, industrial machinery and robotics sectors.
