Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) is making an aggressive display of its product portfolio at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2016 being held from August 11-21.
While SMC’s subsidiary in Indonesia, Pt. Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) is to launch the SX4 S-Cross crossover, it is also exhibiting the Ignis, Vitara Brezza and Jimny as reference models to showcase its expertise in compact SUVs. Also on display is the hugely successful made-in-Manesar Baleno hatchback, which has sold over 80,000 units since its launch in India.
The made-in-India S-Cross will go on sale in Indonesia soon and will be available in that market solely in petrol engine form. The crossover is of relevance to India as Maruti has been working on a petrol version of its crossover to cater to the resurgence in demand for petrol-engined cars.
The Vitara Brezza SUV will be available in Indonesia with the same 1.3-litre diesel engine as offered in India, but with the option of an automatic gearbox.
As with the S-Cross, the Indonesia-spec Ignis will be a petrol-only model using Suzuki’s 1.2-litre K12 petrol engine offered with a five-speed manual as standard as well as the option of an AMT gearbox. This information suggests the petrol version of the India-bound Ignis will also get an AMT unit rather than a CVT unit as originally expected. The high cost of the CVT system could be the reason for Suzuki opting to go for an AMT unit instead. Maruti will launch the Ignis in India in the coming months powered by 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engines.
Suzuki bets big on the Indonesian market
This year, Suzuki is commemorating the 40th anniversary of its automobile business in Indonesia. SMC started its four-wheel business in Indonesia with an assembly plant in Pulogadung, East Jakarta in 1976. At that time, it produced and marketed models such as the Carry ST 10 pickup.
As it expands its business in both the domestic and international markets, Suzuki has three manufacturing plants in Indonesia, located in Cakung, Tambun, and Cikarang. With a total investment of approximately US$ 1 billion, the Cikarang plant demonstrates Suzuki’s long-term commitment to growing the Indonesian and overseas markets.
Suzuki’s share of the Indonesian automobile market increased 2.7% from 9.2% in 2010 to 11.9% in 2015, which is why the company is pushing a range of new products in that market.
