The new SsangYong Rexton has been revealed and its name officially confirmed ahead of its public debut at the Seoul motor show on March 30.

The SUV will continue the Rexton name internationally – but will be called G4 Rexton in Korea – and will be available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

It will go on sale in Korea during the first half of this year and in other markets by the end of 2017 with a host of new tech including Apple Carplay, Android Auto, '3D Around View Monitoring' and a 9.2-inch screen.

The first official picture of the production model shows the SUV draws heavily from the LIV-2 concept shown at the Paris Motor Show last year

SsangYong says the Rexton’s successor will major on safety.

The Korean manufacturer also says it will have a balanced weight distribution and towing capabilities, as well as improved refinement over the outgoing model.

The Mahindra Group-owned SsangYong says the Rexton’s successor which is codenamed Y400 but is yet to be officially named, will major on safety and be available in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The Korean manufacturer also says it will have a balanced weight distribution and towing capabilities, as well as improved refinement over the outgoing model. The car will go on sale in Korea during the first half of this year, and internationally before the end of 2017.

According to SsangYong, the new car has been constructed using a Quad-Frame body structure using 1.5Gpa giga-steel, a world first, it also features 63 percent advanced high strength steel (AHSS) to create greatly improved body strength while reducing weight.

The Rexton successor is 4850mm long, 1920mm wide, 1800mm high and gets a 2864mm wheelbase. It will be aimed squarely at the Hyundai Santa Fe in the large SUV market, and those measurements show the SsangYong is bigger than its Hyundai rival.

The new Rexton will be the flagship model in SsangYong’s range, above the Korando and a new seven-seat SUV that was previewed with the XAVL concept at the Geneva Motor Show this year.

It will come with a choice of a new 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines, and equipment will include lane departure warning and autonomous braking.
