SAIC-GM-Wuling has officially launched several new Baojun 560 variants in China, which include key customer features for its segment, including a new transmission and the choice of a seven-seat configuration.
The changes also incorporate a series of technologies and safety features that will cater to China’s customers. The Baojun 560 pricing range starts from RMB 75,800-117,800 (Rs 771,000 to Rs 12 lakh). Since its launch in July 2015, the Baojun 560 SUV has sold over half a million units in China.
The newly launched Baojun 560 DCT edition has a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that is mated to a 1.5T turbocharged engine. The transmission delivers 360 Nm of peak torque and supports fuel consumption of only 7.5 litres/100 km.
The SUV adopts BorgWarner's pre-engagement technology and dual clutch adaptive control and according to the company, the transmission provides quick, seamless gear shifting in only two-tenths of a second.
Flexible seven-seat interior
To better cater to large families, Baojun enhanced the 560’s original dimensions to accommodate for increased seating. The seven-seat variants are arranged in a 2+3+2 layout. Second-row seats can move forward and backward, ensuring ample space for second-row passengers and enough room for third-row passengers as needed.
In addition, second-row seats can fold in a 40/60 split configuration, making it easy to get in and out of the third row. The third-row seats can also be folded in a 50/50 split configuration to offer the same flat load space as a five-seat vehicle.
The Baojun 560 also features a new interior design. It has a large, floating screen and redesigned air-conditioning vents, creating a lighter visual effect while improving front-row spaciousness. Chrome trim on the dashboard, wood accents and an embedded quartz clock along with a new climate control panel deliver a high-tech feel.
Leather seats incorporate exquisite stitching and combine with a D-shaped multifunctional sports steering wheel to enhance the interior's premium quality. The SUV also has a new stylish interior color scheme. In addition, it is available with an oversized panoramic sunroof.
Enhanced comfort and safety
The Baojun 560 is equipped with many practical comfort features, such as passive entry and push-button start, automatic headlights,folding and heated side rearview mirrors, an Electric Parking Brake (EPB) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
It also comes equipped with four airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), the Traction Control System (TCS), Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), Hill-Start Hold Control (HHC), front and rear parking radars, and ISOFIX child safety seat attachment points.
The Baojun 560 received a maximum five-star safety rating in China-New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) testing carried out in 2016.
Baojuns for India?
As is known, in end-June, SAIC Motor confirmed its plans to set up a manufacturing operation in India. SAIC will begin its India innings with the MG brand, the iconic British marque that was acquired by the carmaker over a decade ago. SAIC's Indian subsidiary is registered as MG Motor India.
The plan is to sell all SAIC products in India with an MG badge. The first model is expected to roll out in 2019. However, SAIC would have access to products from other sister brands like Maxus and Roewe. There is a possibility to tap into the product portfolio of certain joint venture brands like Baojun as well.
Among the multiple brands in SAIC's portfolio, MG Motor India has a wide range of models and body styles to choose from which include hatchbacks, sedans, MPVs, SUVs, hybrids and even electric cars. However, SAIC is likely to initially focus on SUVs, given their current popularity in the country.
Once the plant's location is finalised, SAIC is likely to invest upwards of Rs 3,000 crore in the first phase to establish a strong footing with highly localised and cost-competitive products for the Indian market.
