Maruti Suzuki India and Honda Cars India continued to dominate the list of best-selling cars in the country. Eight models from these two companies feature in the Top 10 this July.
The Alto hatchback retained its popularity with sales of 22,212 units in the month and was No. 1. Three of its siblings – the Dzire, Swift and Wagon R – follow with sales of 19,716, 18,870 and 15,540 units respectively.
These four models together comprise 76,428 units, helping Maruti Suzuki cement its top carmaker spot in the country. The Celerio, now available with a new diesel variant, also features in the Top 10 list with 7,784 units. The carmaker sold a total of 110,405 units in the domestic market last month, notching growth of 22.55 percent and accounting for an overwhelming 49.67 percent of the total 222,368 passenger vehicles sold in India in July 2015.
Meanwhile, a resurgent Honda Cars India, which launched the new third-generation Jazz hatchback on July 8, sees three of its models rank in the Top 10 list. The new Jazz has struck a chord with buyers and became the company’s most sold car in July with sales of 6,676 units. Dealers say there is a preference for the petrol variant. It is understood that around 57% of Jazz’ July 2015 sales are for the petrol-engined model.
The Jazz was ahead of the City which sold 5,180 units while the Amaze managed to just make it in the list of top sellers, with 4,589 units sold in the month.
No. 5 and No 6 in the list are Hyundai Motor India’s Elite i20 and Grand i10 respectively. The Elite i20 continued to be the country’s most sold premium hatchback with sales of 10,031 units, while the Grand i10 sold 8,691 units in July.
With the passenger car segment posting 17.47 percent year-on-year growth in July and the overall passenger vehicles segment (which includes utility vehicles and vans) recording 11.43 percent growth, the industry seems headed for good times.
What could give a fillip to overall growth is the revival in monsoon estimates, a slew of new product launches in the coming months which includes the festive season, and falling fuel prices. Amidst all this change, it would be interesting to see if other carmakers drive into the top 10 list in the coming months.
