Passenger vehicle sales in India felt the pressure of a slowdown in November due to the cash crunch following the government’s move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. Cumulative numbers stood at 240,979 units, up 1.82 percent YoY.
Thanks to record sales of the Baleno, Maruti Suzuki India increased its stranglehold in the Top 10 by taking the first five positions and an overall seven models in the list. As a result of having plenty of bookings for the Baleno and Brezza, Maruti was not so impacted by the cash crunch. The Baleno (11,093 units) drove past the 11,000 unit sales for the first time ever while the Vitara Brezza, with 9,719 units, remained the top-selling SUV.
The top duo of the Alto and Dzire sold 23,320 units and 17,218 units respectively, while the Wagon R (15,566 units) and the Swift (14,594 units) took the next two spots. The Celerio (9,543 units), a surprise entry, continues to see demand.

For Hyundai, the Grand i10 (11,059 units) was its bestseller, followed by the i20 (8,917 units), which was overtaken by key rival Baleno. Renault’s Kwid (7,847 units), a popular choice among budget car buyers, made it to the list at the last spot.
