Popular motorcycle models such as Hero Splendor, HF Deluxe, Glamour; Bajaj Platina; Royal Enfield Classic 350 and TVS Apache see an upswing in monthly volumes. Honda CB Shine, Hero Passion, Bajaj Pulsar and CT100 lose steam in October 2016.
Hero Splendor remains the largest selling motorcycle brand in India with sales of 254,813 units (up 7.71 percent YoY) in October 2016. The top selling model is followed by another 100cc Hero mass commuter – HF Deluxe, which recorded sales of 133,986 units last month, up 24.88 percent YoY.
The number three slot was occupied by Hero Passion, which despite a decline of 8.75 percent YoY, sold 87,489 units in October 2016.
Closely following Hero Passion is Honda’s 125cc bestseller CB Shine range, which ranked fourth in the top 10 list. It fetched sales of 82,753 units (down by 8.22 percent YoY) for the Japanese manufacturer. However, it is to be noted that Honda CB Shine sales for October 2016 remained lower than 90,168 units sold in October last year.
Hero Glamour stood at the fifth position with the sales of 75,320 units (up by 20.55 percent YoY) for the last month.
Bajaj Auto’s popular Pulsar brand of motorcycles stood at the sixth slot with total sales accounting to 63,287 units for the last month. The Bajaj Pulsar registered a YoY decline of 10.38 percent. The other motorcycle range from Bajaj Auto, Platina, scored handsomely in October with an impressive YoY growth of 59.65 percent. Bajaj Platina sold 50,531 units last month and occupied the seventh rank in the top 10 list.

Bajaj Auto’s 100cc mass commuter motorcycle model, the CT 100 stood at the eighth position with sales of 42,616 units in October, down by 35.93 percent.
Royal Enfield’s Classic 350 held the ninth rank in the top 10 bestselling motorcycles’ list for October 2016. The model garnered sales of 37,006 units last month, up by 49.58 percent YoY. Royal Enfield had sold 24,740 units of the Classic 350 in October last year.

TVS Motor’s Apache range stood at the tenth spot with total sales of 35,230 units in October 2016, up by 38.14 percent YoY.
It would be interesting to understand the impact on the sales of entry level motorcycles due to the recent ban of large value currency notes by the central government. Industry expects a certain roll back in the sales typically in the rural markets – which are Hero MotoCorp-dominated territories.
